Sources say that Ubisoft is looking to takeover Apex Legend’s territory with a new Battle Royale that’s similar to EA’s flagship BR.
Are Battle Royales still a surefire bet in 2025? In somewhat surprising news, Ubisoft is reportedly developing a Battle Royale game that’s “heavily inspired” by Apex Legends, according to Insider Gaming. In their report, Insider Gaming shared that Ubisoft views Apex’s declining player count as an opportunity to take over their territory with a Battle Royale of their own.
According to the report, the game is code named “Scout” and has been in development for a few years now:
"The game has been in development for at least a couple of years and will feature 'very similar' characters to Apex Legends including a spin on Pathfinder, Wraith, Lifeline, and other characters from the game."
The head-scratcher is that Apex’s decline is in part due to overall Battle Royale fatigue amongst players. BRs such as Fortnite, Warzone and Apex have seen incredible success in the past, but as the game mode grows older and older, newer attempts at BRs have been met with less and less enthusiasm from gamers. So to make your own Battle Royale in order to kill off another seems a little strange, especially given Ubisoft’s shaky financial position.
Ubisoft has also cancelled multiple Battle Royale games in development throughout the past few years after their failed attempt, Hyper Scape, was canceled after just two years. While the recent launch of Assassin’s Creed Shadows was a much needed win for them, they’re going to need consistent success in order to escape the debt they’re in. We'll see if they can successfully attract the Apex community to a new (but old?) BR experience.
