The Strike, Started in 2024, was Fighting for AI Regulation Amongst Other Issues Facing Workers in the Gaming Industry
SAG-AFTRA announced today that they were suspending their strike against major developers in the video game industry, effective at 12pm PT. Earlier this week, the two sides agreed to a deal in principle, allowing the Union to suspend their strike almost a year after it started. The deal now needs to be ratified by both sides amongst their members.
The deal centered around AI regulation, similar to the film and TV strike that SAG-AFTRA went through in 2023. Voice over and motion-capture work have been long-standing staples in the video game industry, and presented an opportunity for the major developers to bring in AI to replace human-led work. The major developers included Activision Productions, Disney Character Voices, Electronic Arts Productions, Llama Productions, Take 2 Productions, WB Games and more.
SAG-AFTRA recently sued Llama productions, the developer of Fortnite, for using AI to bring Darth Vader to life in the game.
