Ahead of the September release, we got a first-look at borderlands 4 gameplay, loot and more
After the surprise of Borderlands 4 release date moving up to September 12th, PlayStation hosted a State of Play dedicated to Borderlands 4 gameplay. We got a first look at new and returning vault hunters, new movement abilities, the confirmation of couch co-op and more. Watch the gameplay trailer below, and keep reading for all the details shared from yesterday.
To begin, we got a first look at two of the four all-new Vault Hunters: Vex the Siren and Rafa the Exo-Soldier. Vex uses “supernatural phase energy to empower herself and can conjure deadly minions,” while Rafa “wears an experimental exo-suit capable of digistructing an arsenal of weapons.” Amon and Harlowe are the other new vault hunters, but we didn’t get any gameplay from them.
Next, we got to see the new movement abilities in action, allowing players to traverse the map in new ways. The abilities will include gliding, dashing, double-jumping, and point-grappling. Players will also be able to summon a customizable Digirunner vehicle whenever they want and jet-boost around the map.
A new gameplay addition shown in the State of Play was “reclaiming a Silo.” This new experience was said to be one of a few new activities that players will experience while trying to complete their main mission. Completing these minor objectives will reward the player with additional info regarding hidden vault locations, and allow the player to fast travel back to places, such as the Silos, once reclaimed.
Weapons and loot were up next, with old manufacturers returning, and three new ones joining the mix: Order, Ripper, and Daedalus. New to Borderlands 4, Gearbox revealed a new “Licensed Parts system,” which will allow players to “find guns that incorporate the behaviors and abilities from multiple manufacturers into a single weapon, fueling [their] wildest loot variety yet.” In response to player feedback, Borderlands 4 is also revising the Legendary Loot drop rate to make those rewards feel like “special events.”
Other features announced included crossplay at launch for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and couch co-op for two players, and online multiplier for four players.
Borderlands 4 is available for wishlist on PC, PlayStation and Xbox, and they’ll be announcing the release on Switch 2 at a later date. Watch the full State of Play below.
